Replacement Handles For Windows

Double-glazed windows are a popular feature. Over time, they may become rusted or worn out.

You'll need to know your current handle's spindle length and its fixings before you replace it. The best way to determine this is to look at the base of the handle you have previously replaced.

Handle

Over time uPVC window locks and handles may be damaged due to wear and tear or by accidental or deliberate damage. It could be that the handle or lock becomes difficult to open or close, or that they are not locked at all. If this occurs, it might be tempting to replace the entire window unit, however this isn't always the case. Most of the time, it's the situation that a new handle or lock will suffice.

The espagnolette design is the most well-known uPVC window handle. This has a spindle which is affixed to the handle and is inserted into a gearbox that operates the multipoint locking mechanism inside the window. It is essential to match the correct handle and lock to your windows in order to ensure they work together properly, which is why we carry a broad range of replacement handles for all types of uPVC windows.

It is an ideal idea, when replacing the handle of a uPVC handle, to use screw covers to protect the screws from corrosion and keep them secure. You can also employ a washer, spacer or other sealant to create a tighter fit. Having a screw cap in place will also prevent debris and water from getting into the handle and causing damage.

After removing the handle from the window, it's an ideal idea to clean the spindle and the threaded part of the bolt. This will ensure that the handle fits and functions correctly and also prevent dirt from entering the multipoint lock.

It's now time to put in the new uPVC handle. Be sure to read the instructions that came with your new handle.  repairmywindowsanddoors.co.uk  can also take a look at the handle you had previously to get a better understanding of how to do it. Usually, the process is quite simple. However, if you encounter any difficulties that aren't covered in this article you should get in touch with our team for more guidance.

It is important to note that when replacing an uPVC handle called a cockspur (also known as Espag handle), you will require the height of the steps of your window to determine the right size handle. The steps height is the distance between the base of the window and the place where the handle of the cockspur is.

Hinges

The hinges may not be in line with the window frame if your windows start to close and open with a visible gap. It is usually a simple fix that can be solved by replacing the hinges. We offer a range of options, and we can alter the size of window hinges to meet your needs.

We can provide a variety of hinges suitable for upvc and timber windows. They are available in different colours to match the frames of your existing windows. They also come with all the fixings you need for installation. We can supply repair screws for double-glazed windows that have older style hinges. This will allow you to cut the old thread back into the frame.

We have a variety of different hinge types that range from standard casement window hinges that can be used with a standard or tilt and turn handle through to fire escape egress hinges designed for use on larger side-hung windows. These hinges are designed to open fully in the event of an emergency and come with an easy-cleaning feature. We also have restricted egress hinges that are designed to restrict the opening angle of the window to 100mm or less which is ideal for homes with children.

The sound of a hinge squeaking can be an indication that the hinges are worn out, this is often caused by the rubbing of metal against metal. A small drop of lubricant can help, however when the noise continues to recur, it is likely that the hinges need to be replaced.

This is due to plumb windows being able to avoid optional binding. The operating sash is aligned with the frame, and the window will be able to open and close properly. A window that is not plumb could begin to open and close with difficulty or be distorted over time, which can affect the seal as well as the appearance of the window.

When buying replacement upvc window hinges, be aware that they can be purchased in imperial or sizes in metric. The sizes in metric are more precise but this is not really evident when they are fitted. The first corner fixing holes on the track and arm are a standard size, but the rest may differ in length based on the original hardware. We recommend that you measure the spacing of holes on your frame prior to purchasing any hinges made of upvc in order to ensure that they are of the correct dimensions.

Crank

Normal wear and tear over time can cause damage to the window handle, lock or crank mechanism. This could hinder the ease of opening and closing your windows, and also compromise their security. If you notice that your window is difficult to open or close, or you hear a clicking noise when you turn the handle, it may be an indication that you have to replace the crank mechanism. If you're not able to secure your window or the multipoint lock is damaged, it may also be worth looking into replacing this component of the hardware too.

A new window crank is able to be replaced with minimal effort, but you need to ensure that you purchase the right size replacement. Make sure the replacement has the same height as the old one, which can be determined by measuring the distance between the guide for the crank arm bushing and the notch in the track across the bottom of the window frame. You can also determine the spindle length on the handle you currently have to determine the size of the replacement.

The type of handle that is fitted to your window will determine the type of crank mechanism that is required for your casement and window awnings. Espag handles feature a mental spindle on their back, which is connected to the frame of the window, and controls the window mechanism, while cockspur handle have pegs which are fixed in place with screws of three or four that are inserted into the frame and sash.

It's easy to replace your window operator once you've found the right replacement. First, remove any trim mounting screws on the window's casement cover and carefully lift it up to reveal the insides of the window operator (Photo 1). Compare the new lever with the previous one and take off any rusted trim screw. Then, screw the new lever to the window frame, replace any screws that are rusted or bent, and then place the casement cover on top of the mechanism.
